From Segura to Maltby: six breakout stars from the Women’s Under-20 World Cup

With a remarkable display of talent, we highlight six players who could make the leap to the senior World Cup next year.

The 2026 Under-20 Women’s World Cup is moving into the knockout phase in Poland, and after a captivating group stage, we identify some of the young standouts who have shone.

Celia Segura (Spain and Barcelona)
Segura is familiar with high-stakes matches, having helped Spain secure a silver medal at the Under-17 World Cup two years ago, earning the Bronze Ball and Bronze Boot. She has continued her impressive form as La Roja advanced smoothly through their group. Her four goals against New Caledonia showcased her pure scoring instinct, and she has also contributed significantly with her advanced technical skills and natural ability to create space and locate teammates. Her back-heel assist to set up Pau Comendador against China was particularly notable. A product of the Barcelona academy, the 19-year-old forward made her senior team debut in February and will return to Atlético Madrid on a season-long loan after this tournament.
